How We Work
Using state-of-the-art technology and a thorough understanding of how the brain connects, we assess the brain for breakdowns in function from damage or disease and apply therapies to help “rewire” the brain. This process of “rewiring” is called NEUROPLASTICITY, which is defined as the brain’s capability to change throughout one’s life based on the stimuli it is provided. In order for damaged brain pathways to rewire, they need three things:
- Proper Oxygen Supply
- Proper Fuel/Nutrition
Our therapies are all targeted to help your brain receive these 3 key elements on a consistent basis. When we do this repeatedly, the brain heals and symptoms improve!
Oxygen: The brain simply does not work well when it does not have oxygen. Impairments to the brain’s oxygen supply can be affected from many different things ranging from cerebrovascular changes from traumatic brain injury, to anemias, to even problems in rib biomechanics from musculoskeletal injuries. Our testing and examination helps us tease out any problems that could be contributing to oxygen supply problems to the brain. If we determine that there is a problem with this then we provide therapies that aid in improving this. The interventions we provide can range from breathing exercises, chiropractic adjustments, and even low level laser therapy to referrals for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in certain cases.
Fuel/Nutrition: The brain is one of the most metabolically active organs in the human body. It uses 20% of the body’s energy stores and only takes up about 2% of the body’s weight. Just like a high performance sports car, the brain is highly affected by the fuel that it is provided. Nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, and other metabolic problems from poor diet and exposure to toxins, greatly affect the brain’s performance. Our lab testing helps us determine if any of these problems are hindering your healing, and based on your results, we will recommend any dietary changes, lifestyle changes, and neutraceutical therapy you may need to support your brain’s healing.
STIMULATION: This is where we can help the your brain improve the most. Brain pathways that are not functioning well create symptoms that manifest based on the function that the pathway was intended to carry out. For example, if the pathway that controls the movement of the right arm gets damaged, then you will not be able to move your arm very well. Or if the pathway that controls your eye movements gets damaged, then you won’t be able to move your eyes well, and this can create blurry vision, headaches, dizziness etc. The amazing thing about our nervous system is that “neurons that fire together, wire together.” What this means is that it is possible to stimulate neighboring neuronal pathways to the dysfunctional pathways in the brain and get them to connect to eachother! For example: Lets say there are problems with the eye movement pathways in the brain that are contributing to someone’s chronic dizziness and headaches. Neuroscience tells us that there is overlap between the inner ear pathways and the eye movement pathways. With that knowledge we can use specific vestibular (inner ear) therapies to aid in the recovery of the eye movement pathways and help with the debilitating dizziness and headache problems. This is where our extensive testing and knowledge of how the nervous system connects helps us create personalized brain based therapy regimes that help our patients recover. The therapies that we use are different for different cases and they can include eye exercises, vestibular therapy, chiropractic adjustments, non-invasive neuromodulation, physical therapy, low level laser therapy, cognitive exercises, and more.
